Rancho Bernardo
a community within the City of San Diego

Rancho Bernardo was established as a 17,763 acre land grant from the King of Spain in 1789.  During this time it was named "La Canada de San Bernardo".  An English sea captain named Joseph Sevenoaks was the first recorded land owner.  Today we see his name used throughout the community.

Over the next 150 years the land was divided after changing ownership many times until the land was purchased by John and Laurence Daley for cattle grazing.  In 1961 they joined with W.R. Hawn and Harry L. Summers and created Rancho Bernardo, Inc.  Not long after Rancho Bernardo was incorporated, AVCO Community Developers acquired the cooperation and began developing the land on the approximately 7000 acres that it had become.

Rancho Bernardo is ideally situated along Interstate 15 just south of Lake Hodges and San Pasqual Valley.  The 56 connector makes an easy commute to San Diego of less than 30 minutes.  In addition, Highway 78 is to the north, making access to the northwestern communities effortless.

The school district used by Ranch Bernardo students is the impressive Poway Unified School District.  The schools are known to be among the best in the country making this area very desirable for families with children.  There are also campuses for University of Phoenix and National University for adults wanting to further their education.

Rancho Bernardo is home to one of the largest business parks in San Diego hosting companies such as Sony Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, NCR Corporation, SAIC and Eastman Kodak Co.  Many have the luxury of living and working within the same community.

Rancho Bernardo offers many ideal types of housing anywhere from apartment rentals to multi-million dollar homes.  There is also a strong emphasis on Senior Living communities most likely due to the desire of residents wanting to remain in the beautiful community of RB.   A few of these communities include Remington Club, Casa de Las Campanas, Seacrest Village and Oaks North Village.

Recreation within the community is plentiful.  There are numerous golf courses (Oaks North Golf Course, The Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course and Country Club of Rancho Bernardo), hiking trails, parks, nearby fishing, shopping and also The Bernardo Winery which is a welcoming establishment to taste the local wine.

From the time Rancho Bernardo was created, it has been a highly sought-after community where the residents love to call ?home´.  It still captures the feeling of a close-knit neighborhood as it did decades ago.
